Aquatic Therapy At Release Physical Therapy

Release Physical Therapy patients have access to the Sports Club/LA – DC swimming pool, an hour before and after their therapy appointment. One-on-one therapy sessions are conducted on-land, so that patients can maximize both the value from their therapy sessions as well as use of the facility. Following an initial land-based evaluation, or team of trained therapists will develop a customized aquatic exercise and treatment program to meet each patients specific goals. About Aquatic Therapy

Aquatic therapy has long been known to improve strength, function and mobility, and even reduce pain. An alternative form of rehabilitation, aquatic therapy is often used in along with, or prior to traditional land-based physical therapy. The unique properties of water allow patients move and exercise with ease, making the pool an effective medium for rehabilitating individuals with orthopedic, neurological and musculoskeletal conditions. The pool provides a comfortable environment for patients to easily perform strength building exercises with less pain and greater ease of movement.

Who benefits from aquatic therapy?

Aquatic therapy is an effective treatment option for individuals with a variety of diagnoses and orthopedic conditions, including:

  • arthritis
  • balance and gait disturbances
  • knee, hip and ankle injuries
  • neck, shoulder or lower back problems
  • pre- and post-orthopedic surgeries
  • pregnancy-related low back/sciatic pain
  • sports and work-related injuries

The aquatic therapy program at Release Physical Therapy is tailored to meet the needs of patients at all fitness levels and stages of the rehabilitation process. Swimming ability is not required to participate. Although aquatic therapy is not recommended for patients with certain medical conditions, most can participate.

What to expect during aquatic therapy sessions

Aquatic therapy sessions are conducted on land for one hour. Patients have use of the pool one hour before and/or after their scheduled appointment time to put their aquatic exercise and treatment program to action. During each session, a trained Release Physical Therapy clinician works one-on-one with patients to decrease pain and achieve optimal function by improving:

  • balance and coordination
  • body mechanics
  • endurance
  • mobility
  • range of motion
  • sports performance
  • strength
